My creative work centres on the theme of ‘artificial humans’. When I was a child, I had certain thoughts at my great-grandmother’s funeral. Where do people go when they die of old age, or when death comes suddenly? The idea of the Pure Land didn’t really resonate with me. I suspected that my great-grandmother was simply unable to communicate, but that her consciousness remained here. In the medical field, there is the question: ‘Is brain death the same as human death?’ Patients in a vegetative state are alive, even if they have no consciousness. It is difficult to judge what constitutes a severing of the connection with this world. As a child, I felt a vague sense of unease about such matters. Where does an individual’s soul go? It was from this anxiety that I conceived the fantasy of ‘artificial humans’. I wondered: if there is something wrong with the body, could we not simply prepare a new one? The soul would then return to that newly prepared body. For a school project, I created a life-size marionette to give tangible form to these ideas. I designed it to stand upright at my own height and incorporated mechanisms to allow it to move. Ultimately, the structure required three legs for stability, and the result was a creation with limitations: it could only move forwards. When I reached university and began exploring my own artistic expression, I recalled this creation. Now, I am imagining the future as a continuation of these roots. In researching this work, I am exploring the contours of its underlying philosophy through references such as the Greek myth of Pygmalion, the ancient Egyptian concept of the ‘Second Birth’ regarding life and death, and the necrophilia case involving Anatoly Moskovin. Moskovin is quoted as saying, ‘Scientists will bring humans back to life. Until then, I am protecting these children (female mummies).’ The protection of the dead, or of the soul, was a common thread running through all the stories cited. This is the part where I examine the concept of life and death within the theme of the android. It is here that I sense the potential and appeal for both expression and research. In my current work, I aim to break free from existing human forms. Just as the life-size marionette I made in primary school had three legs, it is acceptable to depart from actual human characteristics as necessary. Deviations in form also exist within the process of human birth. It is said that within a pregnant woman’s womb, as a fertilised egg develops into a human foetus, the face undergoes a feline-like transformation, whilst the jaw reflects characteristics akin to a fish’s gills. The webbing between the fingers, seen in frogs and the like, also exists during this transitional phase. Even the most trivial phenomena found in everyday life may serve as subjects for reflection. Consequently, the process of form-making is a crucial factor in this study of expression. I meticulously record these details and translate them into two-dimensional works. The structure of the android is constantly being updated, gradually taking shape as a vessel for the soul. Beyond that, how will it deviate from existing humans? What will ultimately become of my android, which is a kind of object of faith? I love the fantastical human figures that are born through countless creative processes.

Over the past few years, I have come to take a broader view when considering the concept of artificial humans. I am researching the elements that constitute a human being. In doing so, I am also drawing on data regarding my own recent condition. I have just turned 30 this year, marking a new stage of physical ageing. Even before reaching this point, my physical condition had begun to show obvious signs of malfunction. I cannot hide my surprise at the emergence of ailments I have never experienced before―such as hives and small tumours―compared to my twenties. From the outside air to the body’s surface, and from the surface to the interior, the causes of ailments are intertwined; if there were a single clear factor, I could work backwards to determine what is happening within my own body. Whilst this exists in the world in the form of medicine, for me―in the midst of analysing the human condition―it is a phenomenon that cannot be so easily resolved. Allergic reactions, for instance, are clear manifestations of the will to live. Society tends to treat them as mere medical issues, but take, for example, the Edo period when cholera was rampant. the common people, overcome by fear, came to refer to the disease as ‘Korori’―a term derived from the words for ‘tiger, wolf and raccoon dog’―and treated it as a legend of a supernatural creature. When contemplating traces of humanity, or what we perceive as such, it may be akin to observing a phantom. With these multifaceted perspectives in mind, my sensors are becoming increasingly sensitive as I gaze upon and observe every phenomenon in this world. Garateia, which began as a project exploring the philosophy of immortality, now relies on these phantoms and has moved beyond the so-called human form. My intellectual references include Dougal Dixon’s book *Afterman* and the television programme *The Future Is Wild*, with which he was associated. The ecosystems and climate change of the distant future, after the extinction of humanity. Predictions of the changes and evolution that will adapt to these conditions. While scientists gather to discuss these matters with the utmost seriousness, the new human forms that emerge appear somewhat monstrous and have an intriguing appearance. However, the fact that this is one possible future scenario lends weight to the value of the information, and imagining these forms is not a simple task but rather a form of creation in itself. I am currently interested in marine life and its history, as this is closely linked to the origins of life and changes in basic bodily structures. Many organisms from the Palaeozoic era possess distinctive silhouettes, and the essence I extract from them will likely refresh my vision of humanity. I am also interested in microscopic organisms such as ‘airborne bacteria’ as a key concept. These are things we may unconsciously carry on our bodies in our daily lives. I imagine that their proximity to me serves to highlight my own existence. Whilst grappling with the two issues I have set myself, I wish to broaden my thinking regarding artificial humans. Fundamentally, I enjoy experimental thinking, and the boundary between artist and researcher is blurred for me. The emphasis lies on ‘Why?’ and ‘How?’. I believe it is necessary to frame artificial humans as a fantasy, yet I also hope that, by some chance, they might one day become reality. The scientist residing within my heart sometimes says that he wishes to intervene in the future history of humanity. My activities and achievements consist of giving form to the flashes of insight and discoveries that emerge from this inner conflict. When I think that the artificial humans I create lie beyond this, my affection for them is all the more profound.
